SOUTH AFRICA LEADS EUROPE IN RECYCLING WASTE PLASTICS

Plastics | SA recently released figures for plastic recycling in South Africa for the seventh year in a row, with more than 334727 tonnes of plastic recovered from raw materials. South Africa's input recovery rate of 43.7 per cent is significantly higher than Europe's current rate of 31.1 per cent.

Anton Hanekom, executive director of Plastics | SA, which represents the entire value chain of the local plastics industry, said the country's performance in this area was "very good. ". "I believe the latest results show that we are slowly but steadily overcoming the difficulties, " he added.

He went on to explain that South Africa's recycling industry was based on economic principles, whereas in Europe recycling was an environmental principle endorsed by most citizens and local councils. "In South Africa recycling needs to be economically viable to be successful and in Europe it is the right thing to do. Locally, we rely on manual sorting and recycling, and overseas, the whole process is mechanized. In addition, landfill restrictions on recyclable waste are in place in some of the 28 EU countries, while in South Africa only 64 per cent of households have formal waste management. More than 12 percent of metropolitan households don't even have a regular garbage collection system,"he said.

"One of the biggest challenges in building our recycling industry over the years has been getting high-quality, relatively clean materials before they reach the landfill. "although we require source separation to separate recyclable and non-recyclable materials, 74 percent of plastic recycled in 2017 still came from landfills and other post-consumer sources. "

The most widely recycled material in South Africa is still LDPE and LLDPE packaging film. Pet beverage bottles have continued to show steady growth over the past four years. Products made from HDPE, such as bottles, barrels and wooden boxes, make up the third largest group.

The recycling market is growing more slowly. "For the second year in a row, recyclers are recycling more than their direct customers and existing customers want. This makes it difficult for them to survive and remain in business because they can not sell their shares. Therefore, the development of appropriate end markets is critical to the sustainability of the plastics recycling industry,"Hanekom said.

The message is forwarded from the Internet, from it, we can see that we could also recommend our plastic cutting knife for recycling to South African market.
